Mother's Day: What Would Mom and Grandma Say About Your Poop?

Ah, Mother’s Day—a time to celebrate my mom, grandma, aunt Angie and even my GOD MOTHER  who watch over me and all the other kids in our neighborhood, taught us right from wrong, and weren’t afraid to ask the tough questions. Like, “Did you poop today?” They were my gut health mentors

Mom’s Take: Poop Talks Are Practical

If your aunts were anything like mine, they were straight shooter. “You’re only as healthy as your last poop,” they'd say, sliding a bowl of oatmeal or grits my way. Mom's/ aunts know that regularity isn’t just about digestion; it’s about balance, energy, and feeling your best. Their advice? Eat more fiber and stop pretending that Coca Cola counts as breakfast.

Grandma’s Wisdom: Old-School Remedies

My Grandma, on the other hand, was all about those tried-and-true tricks. She’d swear by prune juice, warm water with lemon, or a mysterious “helixir” that probably has castor oil in it. And don’t even think about complaining—“Back in my day, we didn’t have fancy probiotics, just common sense and a good bowl of soup.” Thanks, Grandma, we’ll pass on the castor oil but keep the soup.

Poop: The Family Bond We Don’t Talk About

Let’s be honest. No one really wants to talk about poop, but it’s the unspoken thread that ties generations together. Moms, grandmas, aunts just want what’s best for you—and if that means asking embarrassing questions or sneaking kale into your lasagna, so be it.  My kids only had to deal with me sneaking probiotics in to my granola bars.  LOL

Honor Their Wisdom with Gut-Friendly Choices

This Mother’s Day, give a nod to the women who taught you the importance of good health and wellness. Stock your pantry with gut-friendly snacks, load up on fiber, and stay hydrated. And maybe call your mom or grandma to tell them you’re regular—it’ll make their day.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and grandmas out there, the unsung heroes of gut health! Because let’s face it, they’ve always known what’s best for our bellies.
