The commonality between Gastroparesis and IBS

Gastroparesis is a medical condition that is known to affect the stomach muscles and can stop the stomach emptying, this results in many symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and bloating. 


Research has shown that the symptoms between Gastroparesis symptoms are common with people who have IBS. The most common symptoms that can occur between both are abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in one’s bowel habits.

As the exact cause of Gastroparesis and IBS are still unclear, the condition share similar risk factors. 

 

Mental health conditions like depression, stress, and anxiety or physical and sexual abuse in early life are known to contribute to IBS and Gastroparesis.

  1. Full medical history assessment 
  2. Blood tests
  3. Physical exam 

 

Treatment: 

  1. Altering dietary habits 
  2. Medications to help manage pain 

 

Prevention:

There is no current way to fully prevent Gastroparesis and IBS, however dietary and lifestyle changes are known to help manage symptoms
